Coronation Street has confirmed it will run its first lesbian storyline with characters Sophie Webster and Sian Power, who are best friends in the soap.

The teenagers will share their first kiss on 7th April, after Sophie comforts Sian following her break-up with boyfriend Ryan.

Actress Brooke Vincent - who plays Sophie - told The Sun that the relationship will be “cleverly done”.

“It’s going to be implicit, not explicit, and we want that to come across. It’s emotional and more about the feelings,” she said.

Vincent added she was glad to be doing the storyline with Sasha Parkinson, who plays Sian, as the pair are good friends in real life.

“Sacha and I were friends long before Corrie and I’m so glad it’s her. We’ve been to drama school together and known each other since we were six or seven,” she said.

  • What is the betting that it all turns out to be just a “phase”. because god forbid british television showing a “normal” lesbian on television without turning them into a psycho or killing them off.

I hope I’m proved wrong in this thought but after the whole hollyoaks fiasco im not left feeling too optimistic :s

  • About time! I have every confidence in corrie- look at Hayley and the gay bar man. They are great characters and the stories don’t concentrate on their differences necessarily. A lesbian christian! Great stuff!
