“I won’t marry until gay people can marry” -Charlize Theron

Actress Charlize Theron has said she will not consider marrying her boyfriend of eight years until gay people can also legally marry in the USA.

Theron, who shot to fame playing a lesbian prostitute in the 2003 film Monster, made the comments about marriage while on US TV talk show The View.

“I don’t want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights,” said Theron.

“I have so many friends who are gay and lesbian and would so badly want to get married, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep with myself.”

In April 2009 Theron compared the current gay marriage legislation in the US to apartheid in South Africa.

“I don’t like living in an elitist world, it bothers me,” said Theron, who is South African.

“I don’t want to be part of an elitist sexual preference. It bothers me, maybe it’s because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid but this is a form of apartheid and I don’t want to be a part of that.”

  • Fair play Charlize, but South Africa is now one of the very few countries that doesn’t practice sexual apartheid… You could marry your fella at home with a clear conscience!
