Jane Lynch scoops Emmy Award for Glee

Jane Lynch was celebrating her first Emmy win last night, taking home the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy award for her role in hit series Glee.
The openly gay actress plays sharp-tongued Cheerleading Coach Sue Sylvester in the high school musical drama. The series has proved popular in the UK as well as in the US, attracting large audiences to Channel 4. It has also been praised for its positive and sensitive portrayal of homosexuality.
In her acceptance speech Lynch paid tribute to her wife, Lara Embry, daughter Hayden and show creator Ryan Murphy, who also took home a prize. They were among a number of out nominees, including Glee co-star Chris Coffer.
Witty as ever, the character actress told the audience, “I rarely identify as anything…. But I am an actor. And just like a lot of you out there, we do it because we’re compelled to; we have no other choice or marketable skills.”
The 62nd Prime Time Emmy Awards, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, were handed out at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
The second series of Glee starts on 21 September in the US and is due to air in the UK soon after.
