Katy Perry-inspired lesbian ‘kiss-a-thon’ breaks world record?
September 5th, 2008
Yesterday the world record the for the largest group of simultaneous girl-girl kissing was apparently broken, with 240 girls across New Zealand kissing for 20 seconds.
But this wasn’t part of a gay pride parade, or fundraiser for a lesbian organisation…
…it was a competition run by a radio station to win tickets for a Katy Perry concert. The Edge radio station organised kissing events across a number of New Zealand towns, and invited gay and straight women to take part.
The events attracted a crowd of mostly male onlookers, who can be seen in official photographs gawping and taking pictures on phones and cameras.
Many gay kiwis were less than impressed with the stunt. Comments left on a prominent gay forum GayNZ.com included “This is about as lesbian as a wet t-shirt contest” and “what would they do if a whole lot of boys turned up and joined in – with each other?”
The right-wing group Family Party also slammed the stunt, but for different reasons. “It is another event which further reflects the decline in standards of public decency.” said Family Party Candidate for Northland, Melanie Taylor. “The competition is being held in prominent and very public locations throughout the country, at a time when many families and young children could be innocently exposed to these events.”
All girls taking part were given a stick of chapstick and some chocolate Hersheys kisses.
I can’t believe this. I would imagine a huge chunk of these girls were straight teenage girls! Still I suppose it’s a good thing- raising awareness, etc. Can’t believe it was for a radio competition…bet the station is sifting through tonnes of complaints at this very minute!!!
Julie ∼ September 7th, 2008 2:08 amMmm… Hersheys Kisses, sorry, back to what I was going to say. Although I don’t agree on the fact that it was to win a prize and I do agree that the fact that guys were oogling it just proves that fact that it was like a good t.v. program and not something that shows awareness. I have to say, hey, a starts a start right?
