L Word spin-off cancelled
April 7th, 2009
TV network Showtime has decided not to commission The L Word spin-off The Farm.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the network informed the producers of two pilots - the L Word spinoff starring Leisha Hailey and the Matthew Perry/Peter Tolan comedy The End of Steve - that they would not continue.”
Showtime has not yet made an official announcement about the status of The Farm.
The Farm was intended to be a prison-based drama starring The L Word character Alice Pieszecki, played by Leisha Hailey. Other confirmed actors included Famke Janssen (Nip/Tuck, Jean Grey in X Men), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie in Roseanne) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River, All My Children).
The Farm was to be “much darker… grittier” than The L Word, according to Showtime president Bob Greenblatt.
Many commentators believe that the final series of The L Word was arranged to deliberately leave unanswered a question about who killed one of the main characters, in order to lead viewers onto the spin-off.
