L Word spin-off set in prison

Leisha Hailey January 15th, 2009

The L Word spin-off is to be set in a jail and will not focus on lesbians, Showtime executives have revealed.

The spin-off, which has the working title ‘The Farm’, will star Alice from The L Word, played by Leisha Hailey.

Showtime president Bob Greenblatt says that the new show will be a lot darker than The L Word. “It’s not all lesbians like The L Word. It is more of a sort of mixed group of female characters, some of whom are lesbians.

“There have been a lot of female prison shows over the years that have been campy. This is not campy.”

Actors confirmed to star in the spin-off include Famke Janssen (Nip/Tuck, Jean Grey in X Men), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie in Roseanne) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River, All My Children).

Melissa Leo also appeared in three episodes of The L Word, but she will play a different character in the spin-off.

“Melissa Leo is not playing the character (Winnie) that she played many, many years ago on ‘The L Word,’” explained writer Ilene Chaiken. “I believe that we can get away with that given the actor that Melissa Leo is. She’s a completely different person.”

  • ..so i take it that maybe this is a big give-away as to the ending of the final series of the L word & the build up of the ‘who dun it?’ storyline.. (anyone that has seen the first few episodes will understand..)
