L Word to be axed after sixth season

L Word March 10th, 2008

The sixth season of The L Word will be its last, according to the series’ producer Ilene Chaiken.

Not only will it be the last season, it will also be the shortest - only eight episodes will be made in order to wrap up the story lines for the final series. Previous seasons have had 12/13 episodes.

The L Word was the first ever television series to be based entirely in a lesbian community. It was first shown in the USA in 2004, and quickly achieved cult status, winning fans and awards across the world.

Showtime executives and series creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken says that the show will live on, albeit online. “This is by no means the end of ‘The L Word,’” she says. “The brand and the social network community, OurChart.com, will continue to live and be a destination for lesbians everywhere and a lasting tribute to what ‘The L Word’ has accomplished.”

Series 1-4 have been shown on Living TV in the UK, but since season 4 was inexplicably removed from the schedule half way through the series, many UK fans of the show are not optimistic about their chance of seeing season 5, let alone the final season 6 on British TV.

The L Word series 1-4 are currently available to buy from Amazon.

    Laura N ∼ March 11th, 2008 8:17 am
  • Milly, I left a comment on my blog about how Americans like to complain, because it’s ingrained in our culture. We are also upset that the show is about to run its course, and we really do love The L Word, but the inherent American need to complain trumps all.

    Grace Chu ∼ March 12th, 2008 3:01 pm
  • awwww…dats nt nice.realli loved the show.

    Kirsti ∼ April 27th, 2008 9:03 pm
  • NO they cannot do this to us it is one of the only things that is for lesbions and acceptable….no no no no

    Rachel ∼ May 4th, 2008 1:38 pm
  • The only good thing about the L Word is that it brought lesbianism onto mainstream TV. Other than that it was one of the most cringe worthy series I have ever seen.

What the f**k do you people see in the stereotypical character Shane?

    Kel ∼ May 18th, 2008 8:43 pm
  • Okay that’s so unfair, lesbians finally get brought onto the TV then axed cause people can’t take reality. They probably saw too many clsoest lesbians finally unveil themselves to happiness and that’s why. What season are we on this year? I’ve lost count. And will it only be on the net?HELP!!

    Claire ∼ June 4th, 2008 1:08 pm
  • wat the fuck!!!!!!!!!!
me and my partner love the L word.
They cant do this to all of us

    claire johnson ∼ June 13th, 2008 9:32 pm
  • I completely understand why people feel so strongly about the L Word, I can’t feel very disappointed about it however, as the L Word just winds me up, it presents such an unrealistic, narrow and, as a result, I believe it is ultimately a negative view of what lesbian life is and can be.

    SBF ∼ June 15th, 2008 7:36 pm
  • How is it a negative view? And how is it unrealistic? (Apart from how Jenny still has any friends left of course);)

Its about a group of friends that happen to be lesbians, some of them successful, some not, some of them have difficult things to deal with but find time to laugh along the way.

There’s a lot of similarities between the Characters and my group of friends , and most of us are anything but negative.

    Jayne ∼ June 16th, 2008 6:34 pm
  • Negative because it perpetuates the idea that lesbians exist in a social world seperate from heterosexuals, and gay men. Negative because the women seem comfortable having their lives arranged in this narrow way/represents this as a desireable way to live, negative because the most important part of the women’s identity is, to most of them, their lesbianism. The fact all the characters are lesbians is presented as anything but incidental, which is the crux of my criticism.

    SBF ∼ June 16th, 2008 9:50 pm
  • Why is everyone so obsessed with Shane. Bette is where it’s at - power dyke! Erm has anyone watched Exes and Ohs - it is hysterically bad!

    lost fish ∼ July 7th, 2008 7:12 pm
  • i think this is a shame . what an eye opener the l word is . love marlee matlin.what an actress .

    ali ∼ July 28th, 2008 8:57 pm
  • I think it’s pretty terrible, to be honest. But regardless, six seasons isn’t a bad run for a TV show.

    Lauren ∼ July 30th, 2008 6:58 pm
  • I dont understand. It says up their that is was taken off air half way through season 4 but i watched it all on living tv didnt miss an episode! im confused anyone know what happened?

    Laura ∼ August 13th, 2008 7:07 pm

    Eilidh ∼ September 5th, 2008 4:39 pm
  • The L word may have saved my life. After Dana died thought I’d self examine and found a lump fortunately tho I survived chemo and I’m still here. I’ve loved the show good to see lesbians portrayed as having savoir faire, style very chic.

    suzanne ∼ September 11th, 2008 12:20 am
  • This sucks A*** they will show the whole series of The American version of Queer as Folk but the wont show the whole series of the L Word!!!!!!
