Lesbian comedy premieres to acclaim at Berlin International Film Festival

Julianne Moore and Annette Bening star in new lesbian comedy The Kids Are All Right February 19th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

A new lesbian comedy starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore has received a rapturous reception at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.

The Kids Are All Right - described by The Times as “a riotous and rude lesbian domestic drama that has arguably been the crowd-pleaser of Berlin so far” - features Bening and Moore as a married lesbian couple whose relationship begins to falter when Jules (Moore) falls in love with their adolescent children’s sperm donor.

Moore, 49, said she was attracted to the film because it gave an insight into a long-term relationship, irrespective of sexuality.

“For me the portrait is very much the portrait of a marriage and a family and about what it’s like to be married for a long time and to have children,” she said.

“I don’t think it matters what your sexuality is. For Annette and I, we’ve both been married, we both have children, we know what it’s like to parent, we know what it’s like to be in a long-term relationship.”

The film is written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko, who also directed lesbian cult classic High Art, starring Ally Sheedy.

It is due to be released in the US this summer.
