Mars axes controversial Snickers advert

Controversial Snickers advert July 25th, 2008 by Rosie

Mars Inc has decided not to show a new Snickers TV advert widely criticised for being homophobic.

According to Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Mars announced its decision “following communication between the HRC Workplace Project and Mars.”

Daryl Herrschaft, HRC Workplace Director, said: “These kinds of ads perpetuate the notion that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is a group of second class citizens and that violence against GLBT people is not only acceptable, but humorous.

“We are hopeful that Mars will make the necessary changes in their organization to ensure this does not happen yet again.”

  • This is the worst possible outcome to this.

Just think about it, for a moment:

    - We see a portrayal of a weak, pathetic man in an advert.
    - A small group of LGB publications go “wait, that man is weak and pathetiche must be gay! This is homophobic, this is a hate crime!”
    - HRC and Mars then agree and say “you’re right, being weak and pathetic are gay traits, we’re sorry, we’ll pull the ad”

How in any way does that help?

  • Maybe HRC and Mars are saying ‘you’re right, we intended to portray a gay man; we can see that this is offensive, we’ll pull the ad’…

  • People need to take there political correctness out of their arse. I wonder how many people actually thought the guy was gay until someone made a big deal about it. And I agree with you Matt…worst outcome.

  • Your kidding me right? this is just as stupid as the Heinz mayonnaise advert being taken off air because two men where kissing. thats just teling everyone that being gay is a bad thing. What the hell. I never associated the man in the snicker advert to be gay.
