Sapphic cosmetics for lipstick lesbians
October 23rd, 2008
The cosmetics industry seems to have woken up to the fact that not all lesbians consider slapping on some men’s aftershave to be the full extent of their grooming routine.
Last month we had the news that Ellen will be the new face of Cover Girl, and now make-up artist on The L Word JoAnn Fowler has launched a cosmetics range called - wait for it - Sappho Cosmetics.
Less is obviously not more when it comes to making it clear who they’re targetting with this cosmetics range.
The L Word stars Mia Kirshner (Jenny) and Jennifer Beals (Bette) helped launch the line, and some of the product colours are named after L Word actors: Generous Jennifer, Je Suis Mia, Luscious Leisha, Provocative Pam and Ravishing Rachel.
But hilariously, there’s not a single mention of the L word itself - lesbian - on the Sappho Cosmetics website.
Sappho Cosmetics claims to be ‘chemical free’, which is of course physically impossible. What they mean is that they don’t use chemicals such as phthalates, a plastic substance which has been linked to health problems and is restricted in some countries, or parabens, preservatives which some believe are linked to breast cancer.
Currently you can buy Sappho Cosmetics from the online shop only, and there is no information on postage costs outside of the USA and Canada. But who cares! You can finally wear the make-up used by your favourite lesbian TV show’s stars. What more could any lipstick lesbian want?
Why cant queers use regular make-up??
Well I think this is very silly. Albeit Sappho is a lovely name.
But marketing is a funny business.
If this stuff is good I hope straight girls won’t be too embarrassed to use it. And if it’s not good I hope queer girls won’t use it just because of the marketing.
Elizabeth Arden was bisexual and her famous wartime model Constance Ford was lesbian or possibly bisexual.
Good for Ellen btw.
