Sex and the City star fights gay adoption ban
January 8th, 2010
Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has signed up to spearhead a campaign calling for an end to the ban on gay and lesbian adoption in the US state of Florida.
The lesbian actress, who last year announced her engagement to girlfriend Christine Marinoni, is a well-known campaigner for gay rights.
She is due to launch the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) campaign this weekend in Florida, which is the only state to enforce such a ban in the US, Pink News reported.
In 2008, the ACLU sued the state on behalf of gay foster father Martin Gill, who wanted to adopt two children that he had cared for since 2004. An appeal is currently pending, however the children have been allowed to stay in his care.
The ACLU said that it had been given a $240,000 (£151,000) grant by the Tides Foundation’s State Equality Fund to pay for a three-year LGBT public education and outreach campaign.
“The ACLU’s Campaign to End Florida’s Adoption Ban is designed to support the ACLU’s lawsuit challenging the adoption ban by educating Floridians about the adoption ban and the negative impact it has on Florida’s children and families.”
Meanwhile, it has been announced that the state of New South Wales in Australia has decided to maintain its ban on gay couples adopting children.
Despite an inquiry that stated a change in the law would benefit children, the Australian government claimed there was not enough evidence to support this.
