IconVanessa Carlton comes out

During her concert at Nashville Pride, singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton delighted fans and activists alike, when she told the audience she was bisexual.

“I’ve never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman,” she announced onstage to rapturous applause. Carlton, who split from fellow musician Stephen Jenkins several years ago was headlining the festival and has spoken out in support of the gay community frequently over the course of her career.

She follows in the footsteps of True Blood star Anna Paquin, who recently announced that she was bisexual, lesbian country singer Chely Wright and ’90s pop star Ricky Martin, who announced his sexuality on his blog earlier this year.

Her upcoming album, Rabbits on the Run, includes a song called ‘Don’t Want to be a Bride’ and, during her set at Nashville, she alternated between male and female pronouns in her songs.
