IconWales embraces LGBT History Month

An LGBT organisation has been awarded £49,600 to research lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans history in Wales. The grant, which was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, comes as the LGBT Excellence Centre Wales gears up a large number of events that will take place during History Month.

The project will be the first to document LGBT history specific to Wales. The LGBT Excellence Centre will be working with numerous museums and other organisations to create a new archive of stories, photographs and artefacts. They will also be seeking nominations from the community for individuals who have made a particularly noteworthy contribution to LGBT history in Wales.

Owain Rhys, a curator at St Fagans National History Museum, explained that: “This is an area currently under-represented in the collections, and this project is an opportunity to correct that. It will also raise awareness of LGBT social history across Wales, and enable people to record and archive their stories, for the benefit of future generations.”

The National Museum of Wales will also be celebrating History Month for the first time in 2011. The Cardiff museum will be displaying a special series of portraits, holding a number of talks, and hosting an evening lecture about gay cultures within Ancient Greece.

‘The Ladies of Llangollen’, by Elizabeth Mavor, is about to become available again – true story of 18th century couple who eloped to escape from forced marriages and devote themselves to each other. Jolly good read!
