Word-of-mouth comedy nights raise thousands for charity
A comedy night with an all-female line-up has raised over £1000 for Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid.
The sell-out Laughing Cows event takes place monthly in Birmingham. The nights have attracted a wealth of high-profile comedians, including Sarah Millican, Janice Connolly (as Barbara Nice), Shazia Mirza, Hattie Hayridge and Jo Enright.
Maureen Connolly of Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid thanked organiser and MC Maureen Younger for her support. “What could be better than a bunch of very funny women making a large number of women (and the odd man) have a really good laugh whilst passing the pint pot to raise funds for women and children living in our refuges,” she said.
The events, which aim to champion women in comedy, rely on word-of mouth-promotion and rave reviews rather than traditional publicity such as posters and flyers.
Laughing Cows comedy nights also take place in London, Manchester and and Berlin. Last year Laughing Cows London raised over £7000 at a benefit for the Helen Bamber Foundation, which supports victims of human rights abuses.
